Final Project - Storybook

Finally we reached the end of our project! Hurray :D But before I could shout another hurray, lots of hard work need to be completed!

Huang Shu and I are in one group together and we begin to do our research in the library. We borrow 4 books and just sat through 1 afternoon and brain storm what we should do. Donuts came into my mind and I excitely share this story with her.

Jon & His Donuts

This story talked about how this young man loved to eat donuts a lot and one day found out the shop had stopped selling donuts. Being a very resourceful person, he decided to make his own donuts so that he can enjoy it. However being the greedy one, he made many donuts and as a result he overate and had a bad stomachache. Jon went to visit the doctor and the doctor advised him to stop eating his donuts and give away the donuts to the town folks who had not enjoy any donuts since the day the shop stopped selling donuts. Jon then gave away the donuts generously and everyone was happy and enjoyed the donuts made by Jon.

Fishing then came to my mind... *i saw someone eating a fish burger in front of me... thus Fishing*

Jon Goes Fishing!

Jon decided to go fishing on one lazy weekend. Taking a map he looked for the famous lake which often mentioned by the town folks. The town folks mentioned there were plentiful of fishes for everyone to enjoy. Jon decided to head down and looked for the famous lake. When he reached the lake he spent one whole afternoon there fishing. However he did not get any fish at all. When the sun began to set, Jon sadly packed up and decided to go home. As he walked away from the lake, he saw a dusty signage. He walked forward and cleaned the signage; the notice became clearer and read “There are NO fishes in this lake. Beware of crocodiles”. Jon’s face turned white and ran back home as a crocodile started to surface from the lake

We finally selected Jon & His Donuts instead. We also shared the story with 3 children aged 6, 7 and 9 years old respectively to gather their responses. The 3 children enjoyed thoroughly when we read the story#1 to them and they could even shared their thoughts on what goes through their mind. When we came to story#2, the responses were more slow and delayed and as if expecting if there were more stories when we reached the ending. We realize that story #2 can be continued to build on but however we can also lose the children’s interest as their attention span are relatively short.

StoryBoarding Begin

All graphics are created by Huang Shu. We presented our idea to our class. The comments were positive and they really like the character that Huang Shu had created.

We really like how the final output appeared It was very simple and yet attracted the children attention. We used very simple colours like black, orange and red. Not all graphics are filled with colours. The whole storybook will gives a feel of "children using crayon to colour" look. We certainly pleased with the final output.

The whole project including brain storming, planning to the final print output took us 2 weeks in total. We are glad the printing process were pretty smooth despite a few glitches. Eventually, our book finally rolled out.

Assignment 6: Design Analysis Presentation

Case Study #1 Postcard *Bad Design*

Rule #1 Figure and ground
•cluttered with content
•difficult to read the content printed
•parts of the background is too busy
•both text and graphics is getting attention at the same time

Rule #2 Proximity
•white lines added to separate each content
•no consistency in separation line(thick and thin)
•it does not separate each content properly
•grouping of each content is too close

Rule #3 Similarity
•numbers were big and bold to grab viewers attention

Rule #4 Continuity
•content laid out is everywhere
•no consistency in continuity on the how content flows

Rule #5 Closure
•this principle does not apply

Conclusion
•too much content and images
•some information will be ignored by the viewer
•lack of clarity and organisation
•background images are disturbing
•makes the overall layout too busy for the viewer

Case Study #2 Poster *Good Design*

Rule #1 Figure and ground
•contrast of content and background can be differentiated easily
•content is laid on top of the figure
•using bright colours to give contrast to the background
•content easily absorbed by viewers

Rule #2 Proximity
•text layout is clear
•similar content is grouped together
•can easily separate each content e.g : title, date, ticket pricing, etc
•hierarchy in displaying the information on the poster

Rule #3 Similarity
•highlighted text colour gives emphasis
•to differentiate the information e.g : person’s name in pink, general info in white

Rule #4 Continuity
•largest text used for title
•using different size to differentiate the importance of the content
•eye flow from top to downwards
•position guides the eye to the next section

Rule #5 Closure
•this principle does not apply

Conclusion
•it is more organized in the layout
•there is clarity in conveying the information displayed
•there is a hierarchy for placement of images and text
•can be easily understood by viewer
•information displayed is more unified as a whole

Gestalt law is a guideline to organize information on a medium. When designing the layout, it may not necessary to follow the rules. The usage of the Gestalt law are subjective in design. Some layout may seem to be cluttered, but will still attract some viewers attention

Assignment 5: Wedding Card Draft

Here is my first 2 drafts of the love theme assignment. I had decided to create wedding invitation card for my good friend, Qq. Her wedding is in July thus it is confirm the actual design will get to print out :) I had chosen 2 different looks with each unqiue colour scheme.

Comments On Design 1

The colour scheme is good and very soft. The overall feel gives a very comfortable and serene look.

Comments on Design 2

Image might not look good. However the whole colour scheme gives a very classic looking card. The line theme gives a very nice finishing.

My thoughts that I may combined the 2 concepts together. The colour scheme will be using Design 2 but with a softer tone like Design 1. Image will be taken off and will use other kind of simple graphics.

Alfred suggest that i can do a more different kind of direction of love card. I thought about it and to my surprise I saw a "break up" Card. Kind of unexpected. Fresh but I still very much prefer Love in a positive direction. So sorry, no fresh idea from me :) I am quite happy and contented to further improve on the wedding invitation card.

Assignment 3: U C what I C - Drafts

What is this assignment all about?

Visual narrative – Telling a story with just 10 pictures

Objectives:
Understanding and overcoming constrains/ problems of representation
Using various representation techniques to communicate your ideas effectively

Important: Story should

Aristotle’s Poetic
Have a plot
A beginning (hooking the audience)
Middle (drama, building tempo)
An ending (with a twist – requirement for this assignment)

My twist.... took me a long time to think. I had explored by doing research on the internet on short stories with a twist. Most were quite difficult to implement and plus this was a visual story with no words involved! Sit back and let me know if you were expecting that. :P

Process: Place camera on the tripod and set to 10 seconds mode. Took the girl in red shirt 10 frames. Girl in black dress took 6 frames. Using photoshop merge the 2 girls together to form this story.

Do give me your comments how I can improve the story and the twist. Let me know if you don't understand what's going on!

Assignment 2: Representational Techniques Finalized

Hello!

I had finally choose HTC Touch Phone to work with and more levels to work on as well.

Here is my final output :)

I have chosen this object as it has more details that I can work on. The previous object scissors was too terrible and was very hard to work with. I am glad that the final output still look and resembled of the original image. Please give me your thoughts :)

Assignment 2: Representational Techniques Draft

What is this assignment all about?

Procedure:

Subject: Select an object or activity or location (telephone, running, Bus stop, car, cooking etc). Try not to select an existing subject (eg. Toilet or well known sports symbols)

Create a representative image of the object (you may choose either iconic or indexic representation)

Distill the image through process of abstraction. (at least 5 levels of abstraction from realistic to abstract)

Indicate at what point in the abstraction process the object looses its specific identity and communicates generic meaning. Select that image and develop it into a symbol.

Here is my first sketch of the scissors.

I think I had chose a very simple object and found it great difficulty in doing the final abstraction as the scissors did not have a lot of details in the first place.

Most comments given was the level 5 looks like 2 big pin heads and still look like the same object as before.

Very likely, I will choose a more complicated looking scissors and work on the abstraction.
